The site previously stood in a state of ruin for decades
A 19-century listed landmark in Sutton is open again to the public after an extensive seven-week refurbishment. The replacement of its flat roof and a new floor are among the works that have been carried out at Lindley's Mill on Prospect Place.
Built in 1820 by James Lindley, the mill is Ashfield's last remaining one of the nine built across Sutton centuries ago. Ashfield District Council has been working on the refurbishment, helping to prevent water damage and ensuring the site's future for years to come. The Sutton Heritage Society previously ran visits to the mill and will be doing so again, with a public open day due to be held soon. Describing the history of the site, the society says: "It replaced a post mill which stood on the corner of Mill Street and High Pavement."The post mill was being moved to the site where the tower now stands when it overturned in the process and was irreparably damaged.
The site was in a state of ruin from around 1900 until 2003, when the developer of nearby bungalows agreed to take measures to conserve the building. Lottery funding was later obtained which meant measures including the fitting of a wooden floor could be taken in 2015. Councillor Sarah Madigan, the ward councillor for Leamington, said: "We are over the moon with the restoration works to the windmill. It's a very special and interesting historical building that we are lucky to have in Ashfield. We are proud to preserve it for future generations."
