'We'd budgeted for a three-day city break - we're now heading into a full week. We haven't got the cash to do it'

A teacher stranded in Italy who budgeted for a three-day break said 'it's been grim' after her flight was delayed by a WEEK due to a fault with the UK’s air traffic control system.

The issue started after a technical glitch meant flight plans had to be input manually by controllers. It has since been resolved, but disruption is set to continue in the coming days. But for Helen, from Forsbrook, in North Staffordshire, she knew she had no option but to get back in time for her job at St Wulstan's Catholic Primary School, in Wolstanton, on Monday, September 4.

Despite the relief of securing a route home, Helen says the additional cost of hotels, train tickets and food has set them back hundreds of pounds. She also described the only available hotel they could find in Venice as something out of "Fawlty Towers" - and to cap it off, a thunderstorm weather warning is in place until tomorrow.

"So we thought what cities are nearby that are close enough for us to get a train and fly from. We found a Venice to Manchester flight on Thursday. We managed to book a hotel in Milan last night and we've travelled three and half hours on the train today to get to Venice. We have a hotel here that I'd liken to Fawlty Towers but it was all that was available and what we could afford at the moment.

Tens of thousands more airline passengers suffered flight cancellations today due to the knock-on impact. Transport Secretary Mark Harper said it was the worst incident of its kind in “nearly a decade” and announced an “independent review” will be carried out.
