Harrison was playing outside his home in Penwortham when he was hit by a Transit van

An inquest has opened into the death of the "happiest" eight-year-old boy who died after being struck by a van outside his home.

After his death there was a huge outpouring of grief and support for his family from the local community with dozens of floral tributes left outside the neighbour's home where the collision happened. Layton's mum paid tribute to her son in a tribute released through Lancashire Constabulary in which she said: "Layton was a much loved little boy by all who knew him. He was my world and my best friend.

On Monday an inquest into Layton's death was opened at Preston Coroner's Court. During the brief hearing the coroner confirmed that a date for the final inquest, where evidence relating to the circumstances and cause of his death will be heard, is to be determined in due course following the police investigation.
