The couple feel anxious about their financial future and for the country at large, even after surviving the effects of the pandemic Like hundreds of thousands across the UK, the Gasson family have been forced to rethink plans relating to their home in the wake of Liz Truss’s mini-Budget crisis.
But after discovering that they will now potentially be paying hundreds of pounds extra each month in mortgage payments, they say they have been forced into a “very abrupt change in circumstances”. From online research, the lowest two-year fixed-rate they could get right now would equate to an extra £200 in monthly payments.
“A couple of weeks ago we were planning an extension and now we are looking at the affordability of the mortgage that we’ve got. It feels like a very abrupt change in circumstances,” he toldMs Gasson, a psychiatrist for the NHS, and Mr Gasson, a school caretaker, both work part-time in order to manage childcare. They said they felt lucky to have a home, and were recently starting to feel like they could build some savings.
