NASCAR driver Alex Bowman will miss Sunday’s Cup Series playoff race at Talladega after experiencing concussion-like symptoms following an accident at Texas Motor Speedway last Sunday, Hendrick Motorsports announced Thursday.
Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet, was evaluated by physicians in Charlotte on Thursday, his HMS team said. Noah Gragson, who is set to move to the Cup Series next season for Petty GMS Motorsports, will fill in for Bowman on Sunday.
It’s unclear how long Bowman, who was in the title hunt, will remain out. He’s the second playoff driver to have their season impacted by a concussion or concussion-like symptoms thanks to a rear-end impact. Kurt Busch has missed all of the playoffs so far after backing his car into the wall during a July qualifying session at Pocono Raceway.
At Texas, Bowman backed his car into the wall in a relatively innocuous-looking incident. But he immediately radioed to his team it was the “hardest I’ve crashed anything in my entire life.
