Residents were 'angry' about the closures
A Nottinghamshire town is getting a new banking hub, following the closure of all existing bank branches in the town. After a community request was made by residents in Kirkby in Ashfield, it has been confirmed by LINK that the town will receive a new hub as part of its commitment to protect access to cash.
This has left residents in the town without a bank for more than a year, with many having to travel to other towns or Nottingham for their closest branch. It was agreed by the banking industry in 2021 that following the closure of any bank branch, LINK will identify whether a community requires further cash services or communities can contact LINK directly. The new bank hub will be similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone.
The banks will be working on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days. Lee Anderson, Conservative MP for Ashfield, said: “This is great news for the people in my hometown of Kirkby who were extremely angry at the recent bank closures on the high street.
"Thank goodness LINK has stepped in to provide this valuable service which will not only benefit the people of Kirkby but also its businesses.” Chris Ashton, Head of Banking Services at LINK, added: “Access to cash and face-to-face services are still vital for millions of people across the UK. We’re pleased to recommend the new hub for Kirkby which should be up and running next year.”
