One football finance expert told the Manchester Evening News how he expects the stock market to react depending on how the takeover process concludes.
With the takeover process into its 10th month, there seems growing pessimism among Manchester United supporters that the Glazers will end up staying at the club.
“If there is an alternative buyer, like Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who does not want to buy the whole club, I think you will see less volatile fluctuations rather than a downwards spiral. At the moment it’s sitting where it was in late November.” “Then, the dividends for some institutional investors is going to be vital, especially in an environment where they don’t think the Glazers will sell, in which case the share price will remain relatively low because it’s the only return on investment they’re really going to get in the short term.
“So there is an opportunity there but by the time any announcement is made you’d expect the markets to have adjusted for [whatever is announced]. Then it’s about is the news just a rumour or not, so it's a bit of a gamble and why you’re seeing a few spikes over the last few months.” “The debt will still be outstanding which means the interest cost will be astronomical. That combined with the fact they’d probably want to continue to take dividends out with a view to selling the club at some point in the future all adds up to not a very positive story to anyone looking for investment in players, the academy or Old Trafford.”
