Greater Manchester hospital car park CLOSED all weekend as work on new £20m building takes place
A multi-storey car park is being closed for the weekend while major building work takes place at a Greater Manchester hospital. Tameside Hospital is subject to a £20 million redevelopment project at the emergency department.
Work on the major overhaul began last year, with the new facility expected to open in spring 2024. As the project continues to take shape, patients and visitors are being warned to expect disruption this weekend. Tameside Hospital's multi-storey car park, on Fountain Street, closed at 6pm today and is not set to reopen until 7am on Monday, July 17. Alternative parking is available opposite the Charlesworth Building or at the Darnton Road car park.Temporary traffic lights have also been in place between Astley Building and the multi-storey car park this week, and these will remain in place over the weekend.
A spokesperson for Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust said: "Since the current emergency department was set up in 1992 there has been a 21% growth in attendance, resulting in overcrowding and patients being nursed and assessed in unsuitable areas. The current department is constrained by physical space, which means that during peak hours we have no dedicated area to assess or treat our patients.
"These plans will change all that." The new facility will provide emergency and urgent care, as well as an 'improved' space to support patients experiencing a physical, mental health or social care-related crisis.
