The council also intends to spend around £1.4m buying up properties across the borough

A huge rise in the number of people in need of temporary accommodation in Knowsley could see the council transform commercial units in the borough into homes.

The report adds that demand has at times reached as high as 100 families in need of temporary accommodation within the borough. The situation has left the council struggling to find places for people to stay, having to resort to booking hotel and hostel rooms to ensure families are not left on the streets – with around 30 families “routinely” being placed in bed and breakfast accommodation within the borough.

In a bid to tackle the growing problem, a report is being brought to a meeting of the council’s cabinet next week proposing the council buys private sector units across the borough to make up the shortfall at a cost of around £1m – to be funded through income from asset disposals elsewhere in Knowsley.

The report adds that other options, including leasing from the private sector and using social housing have been considered. The former is described as “challenging” due to reduced supply and increasing rents, while the use of social housing would remove properties for the 2,600 people already on waiting lists with the housing register and Property Pool in the borough.
