“We stand in solidarity with women in Iran and all over the world that are suffering persecution for how they choose to dress.'

Glasgow councillors have expressed solidarity with women in Iran who are taking part in anti-government protests.

Women are fighting for basic freedoms, including the ability to speak and dress as they choose. But the country’s security forces have been cracking down on protesters, with human rights groups reporting around 200 people have been killed and many more injured. In a statement, Glasgow Labour's women councillors said: “We stand in solidarity with women in Iran and all over the world that are suffering persecution for how they choose to dress.

“A woman’s choice on how she dresses is her right and a human right. It is a sad day when how women dress is defined and enforced by law.” Sign up to Glasgow Live's newsletter Get all the latest Glasgow news and headlines sent straight to your inbox twice a day by signing up to our free newsletter. The morning newsletter arrives every day before 9am and the evening newsletter, manually curated by the team, is sent between 4pm and 5pm, giving you a round up of the most important stories we've covered that day. Many women in Iran, including schoolgirls, have been removing their headscarves in protest.
