Labour Party's 'surprise' candidate for crunch West Lancashire by-election dubbed 'referendum on fracking'
A move to select a ‘surprise’ Labour candidate for a crunch Lancashire by-election, that has been dubbed a ‘referendum on fracking', has raised eyebrows among some.
Speaking after her selection, Ashley said: “My offer to voters is simple. I will put the people of West Lancashire at the top of my priorities, in everything I do. I'll listen to local people and tackle the issues that are affecting us. I want West Lancashire to be a better place to live and work. The Conservatives are destroying our economy, our fuel bills are sky-high and fracking in West Lancashire is not the answer.
Her selection was welcomed by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. who tweeted: “Huge congratulations Ashley. I know you’ll be a powerful voice for the people of West Lancashire in Parliament. Looking forward to the campaign.” Some have also questioned whether the national Labour Party had dismissed local candidates out of complacency over what is seen as a ‘safe seat’ for Labour. Speaking to LancsLive, Independent West Lancashire Borough Councillor James Upjohn said he had congratulated Ashley Dalton adding: “I’m happy to give Ashley a chance if she’s elected, as I’m a borough councillor, and I like to have a good working relationship with our MP.
Ashley Dalton issued strong words from the outset on many local issues, particularly fracking and the NHS, stating on her website: "As a parent, a carer, a cancer survivor and a Lancashire lass, I have seen how 12 years of Tory government has put every part of our lives under attack. The Tories have dismantled our NHS to make it easier to privatise.
