A Met Office amber weather warning for rain was issued for Saturday - with residents forced to protect their homes with sandbags and the weather described as the worst since the 2018 ‘Beast from the East’.
Flash flooding hit Dumbarton and the Vale over the weekend, as almost a month’s worth of rain fell in just a few hours.
West Dunbartonshire Council’s sandbag supply was completely depleted, with a spokeswoman for the local authority saying emergency teams worked hard to tackle areas of flooding due to the prolonged period of extremely heavy rainfall. Janine Hensman, SEPA’s flood duty manager, said: “Across the weekend, Scotland faced down a serious and significant severe weather event. We saw widespread travel disruption to road and rail networks and impacts in communities throughout the country.
Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs Angela Constance said: “The rainfall we have seen over Scotland this weekend has been extreme, causing significant disruption –particularly in the west and north of the country. “I would like to thank the public for their patience and for heeding police travel advice and driving to the conditions.
