There are currently 1,000s of jobs at risk
Wilko has confirmed 14 stores will be closed down as the retailer pushses closer to entering administration.
As many as 12,500 jobs are thought to be at risk as the Wilko battles a financial crisis. Bosses still hope some of the 400 stores at risk could be saved but the first wave of closures has now been announced. Lancashire's stores have been granted at least a temporary stay of execution, with none on the initial list. The 14 stores named for imminent closure are: The Fort Birmingham, Bournemouth, Shipley, Stockton, Scunthorpe, Narborough Road in Leicester, Rotherham, Skegness, Grantham, Merthyr Tydfil, Cleethorpes, Woolwich, Redditch and Llanelli.The retailer made the devastating announcement after deciding to file its "notice of intention" to the high court, Mirror Online reports.
In a statement, he explained: "We’ll continue to progress discussions with interested parties with the aim of completing a transaction which preserves the business and will encourage those interested parties we’re in discussions with to move as fast as possible." Wilko, which was first founded in Leicester in 1930, previously announced its plans to shut down over a dozen stores last year. In February, shoppers and workers were told that more than 400 jobs were put at risk after Wilko revealed its restructuring plan.
