An anonymous Wilko employee said yesterday’s announcement was not unexpected, and that he, and other colleagues had seen a “decline” over the years
, including assistant store managers, supervisers, head office managers and call centre workers – whose jobs were outsourced to a South African company.
He also said there was a feeling the decline became more evident since Lisa Wilkinson took over as the majority shareholder, in 2014, when the business was renamed from Wilkinson to Wilko. Ms Wilkinson is the granddaughter of James Kemsey Wilkinson, who founded the business in 1930 in Leicester. She stepped down as chair of the business in January this year.
