The family of a 72-year-old woman who claims to be too scared to remain in her one-bedroom house was told to consider a care home, leaving them furious. Linda Chester lives in a home which is rife with damp but says she is too frightened to open her windows because of frightening incidents that have happened to her.
Linda said: “The bathroom was full of damp. They wiped the ceiling down, and that was about it. I get this awful smell going through the house. If I use the taps or the shower, it seems to smell.” Following an inspection on August 1, Great Places says it found the loft insulation had been removed. This was given as the most likely cause of damp. The housing association says the mould was washed the following day before an extractor fan was upgraded and the bathroom re-grouted on August 15, while loft insulation work took place on August 25.
For Linda’s family, who are determined to care for her, it was an insult. “Over my dead body I would ever let that happen for my mam to be cared for by someone else,” said Denise. Guy Cresswell, executive director of customer services at Great Places, said: “We understand that due to Mrs Chester’s health condition, her family wish for her to be moved to a bigger property so that they can stay over and care for her.
