Three people have died as torrential rain hit Spain after the country suffered multiple heatwaves this summer
Social media footage shows flood waters entering a metro car after torrential rain hit Madrid Spain’s weather service issued warnings for intense rainstorms in Madrid and surrounding areas on Sunday, with residents in the city being told not to leave their homes as rainfall was set to hit a record-high.
Mr Almeida said the record for rainfall in Madrid from 1972 of 87 litres per square metre would in all likelihood be broken with a forecast of 120 litres per square metre.The rainfall, although still heavy in some places, was expected to wane later on Monday. It comes after the southern European country last month endured scorching temperatures during its thirdHelicopters were sent to rescue people who sought refuge on the roofs of their homes in the Toledo area some 50km southwest of Madrid, emergency services said.
“We organised amongst ourselves to make ropes with towels and bed sheets and used them to pull two young men who were grabbing on to columns,” Mr Penafiel, who had been visiting the city in Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia, said.“It just kept raining and we were a little scared, but we were indoors so we were safe,” said Isabella Stewart, a US missionary living in Toledo as she was taking a bus.
