People have been told to 'take action'
The DWP has issued a warning over a text message scam related to the £750 cost of living payment. Those eligible for the payouts are sent money automatically, but the recent scam sees people being told to "take action" by clicking a link in a text message.
The website the link takes users to then asks for personal information such as their name, address and even bank details, Chronicle Live reports. The DWP says the website has no relation to it and that if people share details, scammers could use it to steal money. The full text message to watch out for reads: "GOV: The £750.00 Living Payment is ready, take action by accepting the payment via legalaid.income-division.com". The DWP says anyone receiving the message should ignore it.A spokesperson said: "All Cost of Living payments are sent out automatically and directly to those eligible, and customers do not need to apply or contact the Government at any stage.
Those who think they have been the victim of a scam should contact their bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040. Any passwords that have been leaked should also be changed immediately.
