Thousands of parents will be told that they have to increase the number of work coach appointments they attend
The Department for Work and Pensions has introduced new rules for families claiming Universal Credit. Around 700,000 parents will be affected by the new rule shake-up, which aims to get more people into work.
According to a DWP newsletter, parents claiming Universal Credit with young children will be told at their next jobcentre appointment that they must now come in to meet with a work coach more often, Birmingham Live reports. Claimants with a one-year-old will have to attend a work-focused meeting every three months instead of every six months, while parents with a two-year-old will have to meet their work coach every month instead of every three months.
DWP Minister for Employment Guy Opperman said: "Thousands of parents of young children will start to meet their dedicated work coaches on a more regular basis. This extra support will help those on low incomes to think about and prepare for work while their child is young." Critics say the tough new rules will put parents at greater risk of getting a sanction, where their benefits are reduced or stopped for failing to comply. About 300,000 people with young children – nearly 90 per cent of whom are women – will face a greater risk of sanctions, according to the Work Foundation.
