Fines can also include points on your licence or a driving disqualification in more severe cases
DVLA rules state your vehicle must have a valid MOT certificate if it is to be driven. You also cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out, and you can be prosecuted if caught. There are just two exceptions to this: if you are driving to or from somewhere for your vehicle to be repaired, or if you are driving to a pre-booked MOT test.
In order to ensure people know when their MOT is due, the DVLA offers a reminder service but people will need to sign up to receive the alerts. You can choose to receive the reminders by email or by text message. If you drive a car, van, or motorcycle you'll receive a reminder one month before your MOT is due. If you drive a lorry, bus, or large trailer, you'll be updated two months ahead of the date.
An MOT lasts for a year and the date it runs out is printed on your current MOT pass certificate. The earliest you can get your MOT is a month, minus a day, before it runs out if you want to keep the same renewal date.Receive newsletters with the latest news, sport and what's on updates from the Liverpool ECHO by signing up here
