The council is facing a budget gap of nearly £60 million over the coming years
Nottingham City Council says it will ask volunteers to help maintain a key part of its new Broadmarsh site as it faces a budget gap of nearly £60 million over the coming years. The authority released images in July of the 'Green Heart', an area between Lister Gate and Collin Street which will be turned into a wildlife-rich open space featuring sandstone benches, trees and urban wetlands.
David Mellen, the Labour Leader of Nottingham City Council, now says it is hoping for voluntary groups to help in eventually maintaining the green space. Councillor Mellen said: "The Green Heart will be a new public space and its management and has been factored into future budgets."We will also seek opportunities for contributions to its maintenance from the new developments that will happen around it.
Nottingham City Council revealed earlier this year that it faced a gap of £26 million in its budget for the rest of this year, eventually rising to £58.7 million over the next four years. Plans will have to be drawn up to fill those gaps, with the council's finance chief previously warning that there would be "difficult decisions" ahead.
