Many on social media complained their accounts had been left empty by the error and had been unable to buy food or pay rent and utility bills.

The Co-operative Bank is offering to compensate customers who were left unable to pay their bills on pay day due to a"payment processing system issue".

The bank said it meant"some customer payments, both in and out of their accounts, were not been processed and customers balances appeared out of date". The bank confirmed the issue had been resolved late on Thursday morning and that if anyone had"suffered any financial detriment due to this issue, we will look to redress".
