, I imagined a hectic office atmosphere, with phones ringing and people running from one room to the other as teams looked to finalize their rosters for the closing stretch of the season.My dominant memory of trade deadline day, instead, is a group of scouts sitting around a table in a big boardroom on the 15th floor of 50 Bay St., with TSN or Sportsnet playing at a very low volume on one end of the room.
Over the next month or so, between the midseason meetings and the deadline, a lot of my other day-to-day work would be interspersed with preparing detailed statistical reports on potential deadline additions. At some point, I’d start getting asked for information on players who weren’t covered at the meeting, either to cover all the bases or because teams made available players who weren’t previously known to be available.
This is also because a lot of the moves made by the Leafs during my time there, especially as a buyer, happened at least a day before the actual trade deadline.
