Yes, says writer Charlie Bond ... and here's why
. Along with the new term and new uniforms comes new parents to meet – and the potential of class Whatsapp groups and playdates.
‘Also, I highly recommend having a separate email address, just for school emails. I do this and it's been a game changer! No more losing emails in my personal and work folders.’Once I’d realised that there was nothing binding the friendships other than the birthdates of our children, I began to consider how I could focus my energy on the mum mates II thought about leaving some of the groups, but I also didn’t want to seem rude or unkind.
Eventually, on a day when everything was getting on top of me, I archived some of the chats and immediately felt a weight lift off my shoulders. Interestingly, I didn’t hear from the mums in the groups I’d muted, so I guess I’ll never know whether it was a relief for them too when I bowed out, or whether they were upset about my absence.
Now, rather than trying to pack in multiple meet ups and dozens of playdates, I try to do less. I like to think I’m a better friend because of it; spending quality time with the mums I do genuinely really get on with, and it helps if our children are good friends, too.Of course, while I’ve spoken about the WhatsAppp overwhelm, I also know that for a lot of mums, having a baby can be a really lonely time.
