has been closed due to a 'police incident'. National Highways says the motorway is currently closed southbound between the A56 at Edenfield and junction 1 for Walmersley.
Further details on the nature of the incident are yet to be confirmed. In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for National Highways North West wrote: "The M66 southbound is closed between A56 and J1 due to @NWmwaypolice led incident. Diversion details to follow." An update from the Inrix traffic monitoring system at 6.10pm said: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to police incident on M66 Southbound from A56 to J1 A56 Walmersley Road ."
Data from Google Maps shows delays are building up on the A56 southbound, approaching the motorway. Some slow traffic is also being reported on the northbound carriageway opposite the incident.This is a live event. Follow the latest updates below.
