City Hall challenges DfI to develop a strategy on school and pavement gritting

Belfast Council is urging Stormont to fundamentally review its winter gritting programme, after a series of ungritted roads and pathways last year led to injury and disruption.

SDLP Councillor Séamas de Faoite told fellow elected members at the recent meeting of the People and Communities Committee: “There are issues it is worth raising again with the Department for Infrastructure in relation to their gritting programme. “And I know DfI has been resistant to this for a long, long time, but we have to urge them to reconsider the position on footpaths.

A council report states: “DfI Roads continue their annual scheduled process of restocking grit boxes and also responding to requests through their online Public Interface Portal. “Stocks of salt will be made available at appropriate council community/leisure centres or other council sites. Higher elevations residential areas will be prioritised where icy conditions are more prevalent, and impacts are greater.”

“Last year I spoke to DfI who hmm’d and haa’d because it is their road and our park, and it was just the good will of the council staff that they went out and salted it. There were kids and parents falling all over the place, and parents driving down and getting stuck. It was an absolute nightmare. I would like it to be kept in mind this winter.”
