Nottinghamshire Live readers have expressed fears for the future after we reported the city council is on the verge of effectively declaring bankruptcy. Nottinghamshire Live understands an official announcement is possible in the coming days and after reporting as such on Thursday , hundreds of readers have been sharing their thoughts on the crisis facing the authority.
Nottingham City Council has spent millions of pounds on consultants recently, partly due to past shortages in its own finance teams. Also expressing concern was user Steve Basford, who wrote on the Nottinghamshire Live website: "Best all start preparing for the post-114 council tax rises. The cap will go straight in the bin."Councils wanting to raise their overall tax charge on residents can do so by a certain cap before it has to go to a referendum.
The restriction on spending and financial activity under a Section 114 does not prevent a council from delivering its statutory services, including the protection of vulnerable people. Statutory services provided by a council are those which they are legally obliged to deliver and range from waste collection to child safeguarding.
But despite repeated criticism among readers of Nottingham City Council's own past failings, such as the collapse of Robin Hood Energy, Lee Aindow wrote on Facebook: "People are going to blame the council for this but this has been coming for years and it's exactly the same at other councils too.
