The patients were treated first with a low dose of semaglutide while also taking meal-time insulin and basal insulin. As the study continued, semaglutide dosing was increased while mealtime insulin was reduced in order to avoid hypoglycemia. He and his colleagues were the first to study how liraglutide, another drug for type 2 diabetes, might work in patients with type 1 diabetes in a study he published in 2011.
