He had also told his family he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, but no medical records relating to this were discovered after his death. A CT scan found no signs of cancer. The inquest heard that Cain had been in debt and he and his partner occasionally went without food in order to feed other members of the family. In a statement Sophie's mum Alison Brown described Cain as 'like a son to me'.
"At 8am I woke up and looked at my phone and he had sent more messages about giving Sophie and their son a big kiss. He sent another message about how he couldn't carry on and was sorry and how I had filled the void. He said 'I'll watch over you all' and 'I'm going to be with mum'.
