The woman was shushed by her boyfriend's parents for talking as the family ate in silence
A woman has sparked debate online after storming out of a dinner where she was meeting her boyfriend's family for the first time. The 21-year-old shared on social media how she was taken aback after being told to be quiet by her boyfriend's dad after the family shared a prayer at the dinner table.

My understanding of this has always been that you shouldn’t speak with food in your mouth or be extremely loud at the table. I wouldn't say it's a cultural thing, though.
"I apologised because I thought I had accidentally spoken with food in my mouth or something. But a few minutes passed and nobody said a word. Super awkward and weird, especially since they had been so talkative before. My boyfriend was also unusually quiet. "Imagine sitting at a table with five people, everybody eating soup looking dead serious. So I laughed, it just slipped out. Ended up being told off by boyfriend's parents that I was being disrespectful etc. and if I didn’t respect how their household worked I could eat alone in the kitchen."
Many of those who commented on the post where sympathetic to the girlfriend, with some shocked her boyfriend hadn't warned her about what dining with his family was like. People also couldn't believe the family didn't go easier on her, given it was her first time meeting them.
