Caitlin Edwards needed multiple blood transfusions and dialysis after contracting E. coli
A young woman was left with life-threatening illness after swimming off a beach where a ‘suspected sewage spill’ had happened. Caitlin Edwards, 22, needed multiple blood transfusions and dialysis after contracting E. coli which led to haemolytic uraemic syndrome , a rare condition damaging her kidneys.
Storm sewage had been discharged at four popular Welsh beaches, including Wiseman’s Bridge and nearby Saundersfoot, with Welsh Water combined storm overflows held responsible. Caitlin and Jayne were going for a swim every day before she went back to university - but when she went from her Pembrokeshire home to London for her studies she began to feel unwell. Caitlin had stomach cramps, diarrhoea and it was so severe she went to hospital where E. coli and HUS was diagnosed - and her condition deteriourated very quickly.
Jayne said Public Health Wales did a “full investigation” into everything Caitlin had eaten and concluded that the likeliest cause was untreated sewage – harmful bacteria from contaminated water had passed into her intestine. However PHW told us they were unable to comment on individual cases.
