“At the end of the day, I was creating something that I wanted to wear,” says Williams.
“At the end of the day, I was creating something that I wanted to wear,” says Matthew Williams, a man who is as verbally attuned to minimalism as he is to the physical creation of it. “And that others around me would want to wear, too.”
The American designer is sat in a sun-drenched corner penthouse overlooking Tokyo.
There’s an element of poacher turned gamekeeper here, Williams recalls of how his relationship with AP began. “We had made a customisation of a Royal Oak in the past,” he says, of having – a few years back – been so enamoured with the brand that he commissioned a special, non-sanctioned customisation of a piece, in black and featuring his signature Alyx buckle.
“We put our buckle on the band and made a quite minimal version of the watch,” he recalls, “and then it was really well-received out in the world, and AP became aware of the brand through that project. I met François [-Henry Bennahmias, Audemars’s CEO] and the team and we started discussions around creating a series of watches that were official products made with AP.”
