The GMB union says it has met administrators of the Nottinghamshire-based firm
The trade union representing thousands of Wilko workers claims all redundancies have been suspended whilst administrators consider further bids for the retail giant. Since the announcement that the Nottinghamshire-based firm had gone into administration, administrators Price Waterhouse Cooper have been working through bids for the company.
PwC then confirmed on August 23 that no potential buyer had expressed interest in the entirety of the business, meaning job losses and store closures were "likely" in the future. Reports then emerged over the bank holiday weekend that two last-minute bids had been put in for Wilko. The first was reportedly from Canadian businessman Doug Putman, who bought HMV in 2019, whilst the second was reportedly from restructuring specialist M2 Capita. The GMB Union now says it held a meeting with administrators on Tuesday and claims all redundancies have been suspended whilst further bids are examined.Andy Prendergast, GMB National Secretary, said: "All redundancies at Wilko have been suspended while the administrator considers further bids.
Reports on Monday suggested the GMB Union was seeking an urgent meeting with the business secretary to ensure that administrators considered all bids for Wilko. A PwC spokesperson previously said: "Since our appointment as administrators of Wilko we have worked relentlessly to secure a sale of the business, and talks are continuing with a number of parties.
"As administrators, we're intent on achieving the best outcome for everyone involved while preserving as many jobs as possible and adhering to our statutory duty to act in the best interests of the creditors as a whole. It would be inappropriate to comment on individual bidders or interested parties at this stage in the process."
