People have, on average, six years of living independently once mild cognitive impairment starts. If that decline is slowed by a quarter by lecanemab it could in theory equate to an extra 19 months of independent life, but it is too early know if that happens in reality and only time – and further research – will tell.
Eisai said the lecanemab study results “prove” the amyloid hypothesis, but most scientists say amyloid is only one part of the complex picture of Alzheimer’s disease and should not become the sole focus of therapies.
