Liz Truss must choose between rewarding her supporters and picking a candidate who can command respect across the Conservative Party
, tasked with the job of steadying the ship.
“Jeremy Hunt as Chancellor is somebody who shares my desire for a high-growth, low-tax economy, but we recognise because of current market issues we have to deliver the mission in a different way. He is seen as a follower of the David Cameron/ George Osborne school of economics, prioritising balancing the books over going for growth.
Mr Hunt’s appointment has been met with a mixed response. Nadhim Zahawi, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, has tweeted his support, writing: “Congratulations to my friend Jeremy Hunt on becoming Chancellor.“I’m looking forward to working with him, delivering on this Government’s promise to make a real difference to peoples lives.”
“He is trusted and respected across parliament,” he said. “We must now be calm. Rash talk of ditching the PM, or calls for a general election, will not calm financial markets.” However, the Labour leader, Keir Starmer, said sacking Mr Kwarteng “doesn’t undo the damage made in Downing Street”.
