Considered unlucky throughout Western culture, the date prompts people to stay indoors, reschedule flights, and avoid certain dangerous tasks. In fact, it’s estimated that the US economy loses up to $900 million every time the day comes around.

The sexist undertones of Friday 13th could also be said to go back further than Judeo-Christian European society. Sally Howard, feminist journalist and author of books including The Home Stretch , tells Metro.co.uk: ‘There are 13 phases of the moon in a year, which have long been associated with the feminine and the menstrual cycle.
