The Home Secretary’s remarks comparing extremist elements within pro-Palestinian marches with Northern Ireland’s own traditions of protest and dissent have drawn alarm from experts and politicians

Riot police stand by as members of the Orange Order parade in Belfast. Marching remains an intrinsic part of Northern Ireland’s political culture, overseen by a quasi-judicial Parades Commission which must give permission for each event. Home Secretary’s remarks

“There are dissidents on both sides in Northern Ireland but the links the Home Secretary is making are needlessly provocative and based on stereotypes. At the kindest, what she says is unhelpful to the peace process. To put it more bluntly, it is extremely worrying that a senior member of the current government uses this sort of language.”

Prof Elliott said that regardless of whether Ms Braverman was singling out republican or unionist extremists, her remarks were historically inaccurate and likely to cause offence to both communities in Northern Ireland. She said: “The sectarian divide runs very, very deep in Northern Ireland but can you actually call that ‘hate’? I would not put that word on it.

“We have specific rules about what marches can take place. That decision was taken out of police hands many years ago and that determination is made by the Parades Commission. Anybody who wants to march in Northern Ireland has to put in a form and ask permission to do that.”
