Statistics show which dogs people are getting rid of as shelters fill up with breeds such as German Shepherds and Akitas
The UK is home to over 12 million dogs and a fifth of the public find their pets in rescue shelters. But since the pandemic, there has been a year-on-year increase in people abandoning their pups, with 14,462 reports of dumped dogs made to the RSPCA in 2021.
With National Dog Adoption Day on the October 25, Barkridges has compiled a list of the top 10 dog breeds most likely to be abandoned, based on data gathered from leading UK dog charities. Staffordshire Bull Terriers also known as Staffies rank the highest in dog abandonment. Staffies face some of the most abuse and neglect in fact, 80% of cruelty-to-animals prosecutions have involved the breed. The dogs are also most likely to be abducted and used by gangs for fighting rings or as guard dogs.
Ranked by how many dogs are up for adoption with different charities, the most abandoned breeds are Staffordshire Bull Terrier, German Shepherd, Japanese Akita and Pitbull. Also in the chart are Rottweiler, Bulldog, Boxer, Lurcher and Jack Russell. Large dogs and dogs seen as potentially aggressive are being abandoned ahead of an oncoming ban by the UK Government on American XL Bullies.
