Forecasters have issued a typhoon red warning - the highest level - with wind speeds of 130mph registered
Water levels in Hong Kong are expected to rise considerably towards midnight on Friday until noon on Saturday due to the storm surge. Observatory forecasters have warned there may be “serious flooding in low-lying coastal areas”.
Hong Kong’s government said the city would raise its strong wind signal to No.8 between 2am and 5am on Friday, bringing the city to an effective standstill with most businesses and the stock exchange shut. It warned of potentially destructive winds and possible flooding, with some areas expected to receive up to eight inches of rain.
Authorities in Shenzhen city, in Guangdong province, have said they will upgrade the typhoon warning level to yellow at 6pm local time on Thursday, and suspend classes at nurseries, kindergartens, and primary and secondary schools.
