Front offices in the Eastern and Central time zones complained that a 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT deadline was so close to game time, it created complications they didn’t think were helpful: • Other execs described “uncomfortable” situations involving having to haul players out of clubhouses, dugouts and food rooms, right before game time, to inform them they were being traded, designated for assignment or sent to the minors.“I’m trying to have conversations with players, and meanwhile, I’m still getting phone calls from GMs. And I’m thinking, ‘This is awful.’”FROM AN AL EXEC:
OK, for the record, here’s that answer: The league wanted to give West Coast teams more time than a 1 p.m. Pacific deadline provided. It also wanted a time that wouldn’t conflict with either day games or night games, so there would be no worries about mid-game deals that caused possible competitive issues. And the later time made it easier for fans to lock into the deadline drama as the witching hour approached.
