A play that draws oohs and ahhs in camp becomes less buzzworthy when one knows the nuances of the drill and what's involved.
“For the most part, the quarterback is supposed to be at this spot in the pocket,” Schwartz explains. “So your relationship of how you’re blocking is always influenced by where you expect the quarterback to be. So it depends on, what the team’s philosophy is, and kind of what the quarterback’s typical drop is. But for the most part, a good reference point is 10 yards, you know, as an offensive tackle, you want to have your defensive end blocked to a 10-yard, you know, deep spot.
“But the flip side is, did a lot of things really well. Like he’s taking a good set, I would say he’s using really good leverage for such a big guy against Brandon Graham, who’s not the tallest defensive lineman,” Schwartz said. “You could say that he’s kind of working on what we call a finishing move and is trying to dump Brandon Graham. And that’s where you don’t know if it’s a live situation if that happens sooner or not.
