. They’ve been held scoreless in six of their last seven matches against World Cup-bound opponents — a run of games that stretches back to January. Their last two matches prior to the tournament were extremely disappointing, with the Americans failing to register a single shot on goal in that 2-0 loss to Japan before drawing 0-0 within Spain a few days later. Those were friendlies of course, played in front of sparse crowds far from the home soil of any of the teams involved.
I think they’ll finish second and advance out of Group B, though doing so will be extremely difficult. I don’t see them going beyond the round of 16, but, as Berhalter has mentioned repeatedly over the last few months, anything can happen in a single-elimination knockout contest. No one expected the U.S.
