Netflix has released a new drama series, Painkiller, based on the true story of the Sackler family and their role in creating the US opioid crisis
They bought a pharmaceutical company called Purdue Frederick in 1952, eventually turning it into Purdue Pharma. Arthur’s knowledge of medical marketing combined with the brothers’ expertise, helped create an significant appetite for drugs among the US public.
Mr Sackler became president of Purdue Pharma in 1991 and became co-chairman in 2003. At this time $1.6bn of OxyContin had already been sold. In 2019, an email disclosed in a Massachusetts court case showed Mr Sackler allegedly attempting to shift blame for the crisis onto the individual users themselves, rather than his company.
Under the terms of a settlement, Purdue Pharma is to be dissolved, along with its UK arm, Mundipharma. The funds will go towards the $6bn settlement of which $750m goes to victims and families of those affected if it is ruled to go ahead. $3bn of the potential settlement is coming from the family’s own fortune.
