“There is a group of people here who are all over 70 years old and can communicate in their own language. They come into this church and communicate purely in Welsh'
One of the last remaining free churches in the city it is a haven for Welsh speakers. The congregation represents a former way of life, centered around the church.
Ifor Griffth, 83, has been a member since moving to Liverpool in 1960. He told the ECHO: “This chapel is only one of two left here but when I first came to Liverpool there were over 50. It comes from your upbringing the rural way of life, but the language is the most important…It was changing when I came.
Areas - including Vauxhall, Anfield, Everton, Dingle, and Wavertree - were noted for their high migrant populations, with terraced street names like Denbigh Road, Snowdon Lane, and Barmouth Way. By 1900, there were around 90 Welsh chapels, church mission halls, and even Welsh language newspapers. “For us speaking Welsh, is easy, for children who are educated in an English city to keep their parent's first language is very difficult. English is such a powerful language to speak and learning Welsh is challenging.
Liverpool's Welsh population started to drop during World War Two and continued to fall through the 50s and 60s. Bethel Welsh Presbyterian Church is working to preserve its history for future generations.
