Plans to build flats on the site of a former pub have been approved more than two years after being submitted.
The historic Haygate pub in Wellington hosted thousands of bands and had a reputation for being a venue where emerging rock bands could showcase their talent.A planning application was submitted in 2021 for a block of 18 flats. There was substantial opposition to the initial proposals, leading to the plans being re-submitted with changes to the building's design.
Telford & Wrekin councillors approved the plans in July last year, despite raising some concerns about the originally proposed 18 parking spaces.Twenty spaces will be built, which has been deemed acceptable, as not all future residents are expected to have cars.The proposal for 18 flats would normally require five of them to be designated for "affordable housing", but the Haygate Road development won't have any, as it has been decided the scheme would not be viable.
A financial Section 106 agreement will see the applicant pay £11,700 towards improving existing recreational and sports facilities and £61,103 towards primary and secondary school facilities.
