Olfactophilia, for those of you who don’t know, is sexual arousal caused by smells and odours emanating from the body. This is something I can certainly relate to. I am not a hardcore olfactophile, though many of us are, but give me a lover who smells good and I go positively weak at the nose. I don’t mean the smell of aftershave or a fancy shower gel, I mean the warm, subtle, slightly sweet smell of skin that you only get when you are. Their hair, their clothes, their body. I love it. Do I sound like Hannibal Lecter? I promise I am not going around smelling skin for kicks, but for me, getting to breathe in a lover’s unique scent is about as sexy as it gets.
I’ve always had a keen nose. It’s not even just sexy smells that intrigue me. I love the smell of babies’ heads, of my mum’s jumpers, and my grandmother’s bag of knitting. I love the smell of my friend’s houses when I walk in the front door because it’s like being hit by an olfactory hug. When I order second hand clothes from eBay, I can smell the person who sent it: their washing powder, their cleansers, and probably a bit of them too., I promise there is a lot of science to back me up..
We are hardwired to avoid bad smells, which makes sense when you think about it. Reacting to bad smells keeps us away from rotting food, decay, and disease. That face you pull when you even think about a stinky, sweaty body is called the disgust reflex. It is a very primal part of our brain that can override most of our basic instincts, and it has to be. If you are starving and try to eat putrid meat, it will kick in to stop you.
