'I used to work in a bank and becoming involved in Grow initially as a volunteer was lifechanging for me'
A thin stretch of land nestled between a car park and leisure centre is the last place you would think nature is thriving.
But the work has delivered a space he says is also “good for mental health cooperation” where school kids, youth clubs, community groups, refugees, asylum seekers and more can come together to take care of the land and each other. “It’s great craic watching, from the wee munchkins to the teenagers, come in and dig out a spud for themselves - some of them realising for the first time, spuds come out of the ground.”
“Everybody from the youngest P3 kid who’s come in here to the oldest pensioner is getting nourished by this space and then on top of that we are contributing to the Black Mountain Rewilding project, we’ve a tree nursery, we’re connected to four other gardens across the city so communities are connecting.”
