Bonney-Rae Barrow's family speak of the devastation caused by dangerous driver who inhaled laughing gas at the wheel
The pair had grown up together and had a friendship "filled with fun and laughter". When Hughes was found sobbing beside the wreckage of his Mercedes Sprinter van, he described 15-year-old Bonney as his 'cousin'. But on July 7, 2023, Hughes, a parcel courier, made a string of reckless decisions which cost Bonney her life.
Shocking footage, which was deemed to distressing to be shown in court, showed Hughes dancing at the wheel with his hands in the air. He veered into other lanes and stopped on the hard shoulder, claiming he "wasn't arsed." At one point he pulled over to inhale more nitrous oxide from a fire-extinguisher sized cannister by the side of the road.
When Sarah went for surgery she trusted Hughes to keep an eye on her teenage daughter and make sure she got to school on time. On July 8, he had planned to meet friends, but promised to give Bonney a lift home first. Believing the crash was an accident, Sarah was also worried for Hughes, who she described as "part of the family." However she soon learned he may have been responsible for the tragedy which killed her daughter.
The court heard several cannisters of nitrous oxide were found in Hughes' bedroom following the collision, and it was clear he was a regular user of the drug. The court heard he has no previous convictions and now has PTSD as a result of the collision. "Of course you didn't expect this to happen with someone you loved. You and she were having a good time when you were driving along. You could have had a good time without nitrous oxide.
