Lidl and Aldi have their own versions of Nescafe Azera - so we put them to the test
Yes, we're a nation of tea drinkers, but when you've first logged into your work computer or when you're on the school run, is there really anything better than a coffee to start your day? Some of us enjoy a bean-to-cup variety, a coffee shop treat or simple instant coffee from the kitchen cupboard.
This is in relation to branding and the names, but do they hold a striking resemblance in terms of taste? Let's find out.A "wholebean instant coffee", the Aldi entry looks awfully similar to one we've seen before. Although it looks similar, it is slightly bigger than the Nescafe one at 100g, compared to the Azera at 90g.
Initially, the Aldi Alcafe coffee has a very caramel-like smell, it doesn't smell bitter or even bland, there's definitely a smell of the roasted beans that's almost sweet. The grounds themselves are fine in texture and the jar is filled to the brim. Marketed as a "premium" coffee, this Americano describes itself as "barista-style premium coffee" that delivers "smooth and well-balanced aromatic flavours of expertly selected Arabica and Robusta coffee beans." Surprisingly, this is the only one of the three that details what coffee beans are actually included and describes the tasting notes in such detail.
The taste was actually a lot better than the Aldi version, with a bitter flavour that was more welcome. It tasted more full-bodied, as any coffee connoisseur would probably shoehorn into a review. But it's true because in all honesty, that's the best way to describe it.You can't do a comparison review without trying the real deal as well. The Nescafe Azera is a popular jar of coffee and the brand does have many variations of this, including decaf, Craft Grindsmith and espresso.
