The Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign wants to see millions of women paid compensation
The Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign group has said almost four million women saw their retirement plans "plunged into chaos" at the last minute, after the Department for Work and Pensions increased the State Pension age from 60 to 65, and later 66.
A government watchdog is investigating the DWP's failure to communicate the changes with some women given as little as 12 months notice, Lancs Live reports. WASPI campaigners say this compares to men receiving six years notice of a one-year rise to their state pension age. They argue the lack of notice robbed millions of women of the ability to adequately plan for their retirement.
A final report on the investigation, including any compensation the ombudsman might recommend, is still to be published after being delayed, but many women want to know now what action they need to take. WASPI says it is frequently asked 'Am I a WASPI woman?' and whether WASPIs need to sign up for any compensation.
The WASPI website states: "We are angry that we have been treated unfairly and unequally just because of the day we were born. Significant changes to the age w receive our state pension have been imposed upon us with a lack of appropriate notifications, with little or no notice and much faster than we were promised - some of us have been hit by more than one increase."
