Breadmaking expert Warren Carr of Highs and Loaves hosts classes for baking beginners and explains how you too can bake wonderful smelling and tasting, easy-to-make bread for everyday eating
First, put the four dry ingredients into a bowl and give them a quick finger mix. Then, add the butter before pouring in the water. Mix by hand until you have a sticky dough. Don’t add any extra flour or water!Knead the dough on an unfloured surface for 5 to 8 minutes until it is smooth and supple. Tuck the dough in on itself to form a tight ball and put it in a bowl covered with a clean tea towel. Leave it to prove for 1 to 1.5 hours.
If you want to use a traditional baking tin instead , turn your ball into an oval shape before you place it in the tin – no need for any slashes.Leave it uncovered to prove again for 1 to 1.5 hours, then bake in a preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until it has a good colour on it. Oven temperature: Fan assisted 200 C; Normal oven 220 C/425 F; Gas mark 7You can save your bread to be eaten at a later date if needed, bread can be frozen for up to six months in a freezer.
